Installed right, not just dumped

Good mulch work is mostly about depth and edges. We install mulch at 2 to 3 inches: enough to hold moisture and suppress weeds, not so deep that it suffocates roots. Around trees the mulch stays pulled back off the trunk, because the volcano style you see around town invites rot and rodents. Beds get a clean cut edge first so the mulch has a defined line to sit inside, and existing mulch gets turned or removed when it is matted.

Mulch or river rock?

  • Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down, holds moisture for plantings, and looks warm. It needs a refresh every year or two.
  • River rock never needs replacing, will not blow or wash out of most beds, and shrugs off snow shoveled onto it in an Iowa winter. It is the low-maintenance pick for house perimeters, downspout runs, and beds without heavy plantings.
  • Many properties want both: rock along the foundation and high-traffic strips, mulch in the planted beds.

How the quote works

We measure your beds and calculate the actual cubic yards needed at proper depth, so you are not paying for guesswork. The price is driven by square footage, material choice (hardwood mulch, colored mulch, or rock size and type), haul-out of old material, and access to the beds. Delivery and installation are included in the quote.

Common Questions

Questions we hear a lot.

How much mulch do I actually need?

Measure bed square footage and multiply: one cubic yard covers about 160 square feet at 2 inches deep, or about 108 square feet at 3 inches. We measure and do the math as part of the free quote.

Do you remove the old mulch first?

When it is matted or too deep, yes. A thin, healthy existing layer can be turned and topped instead, which saves you money. We will tell you which your beds need when we look at them.

Which lasts longer, mulch or rock?

Rock, by far. Mulch improves your soil but wants a refresh every year or two. Rock costs more up front and then stays put for years. Foundation lines and downspout runs are where rock earns its keep.
