Waterloo's long-established bluegrass lawns are prime thatch builders. When the spongy layer passes half an inch, the lawn stops responding, and it is time.
Decades-old Kentucky bluegrass lawns, and Waterloo has thousands of them, are exactly the lawns that build problem thatch. Bluegrass spreads by rhizomes, and the dead stems and crowns accumulate into a mat that eventually sheds water like a roof. The tell-tale signs: the lawn feels bouncy underfoot, rain runs to the gutter instead of soaking in, and fertilizer that used to work does nothing.
The diagnosis is cheap: a small wedge cut from the turf shows the brown, spongy band between grass and soil. Under half an inch is healthy cushion; over it, dethatching pays. We check as part of the free quote, and if your problem is actually compaction or fertility instead, we will say that and point you at the right service.
Dethatching happens when the grass can rebuild: late August into September first, early spring second. We run the power dethatcher, rake and haul the material out, and the lawn comes back thicker. In the fall window it pairs perfectly with aeration, overseed, and the mid-September feeding.

Late August into September is best because the lawn recovers through the cool fall. Early spring is the second window. Summer dethatching stresses turf when it is least able to recover, so we do not do it.
